He’s the same knife-wielding Muslim, Abdulrahim Sulaiman, a ‘defense subcontractor employee,’ who ‘wandered’ into a NY State elementary school in 2010, claiming he got lost while looking for Fort Dix Army Base in New Jersey, at least 100 miles away.

PIERMONT — A Connecticut (MUSLIM) man Abdulrahim Sulaiman, 23, of Bridgeport had already entered the main lobby of Tappan Zee Elementary School before 8 a.m. Wednesday, when he was spotted by school officials, police said.

After a call from Principal William Lee, police officers from Piermont and Orangetown arrived and arrested Sulaiman at a nearby convenience store. Police said Sulaiman was carrying a gravity knife at the time of his arrest. The knife is similar to a switchblade.

In an e-mail to parents, Lee said he had questioned Sulaiman “for a few minutes” before asking him to leave. No one was injured. Lee said classes were not canceled, but students and staff were on lockdown while police swept the building.

Sulaiman was charged with third-degree criminal trespass and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors. He was being held in the Rockland County jail. Bail was set at $5,000 cash. It remained unclear why Sulaiman had entered the school.

Abdulrahim Sulaiman, 25, of Bridgeport, who was temporarily living in Pemberton Township, was sent to Burlington County Jail on two counts of first-degree attempted murder. Superior Court Judge Jeanne T. Covert ordered that he be held on $1 million bail and have no contact with the victims if he makes bail.

Sulaiman admitted to authorities that he stabbed a fuel deliveryman at the Valero gas station on Route 206 in Mansfield, but his motive for what authorities described as a random attack was still unclear, Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor John Brennan said. 

Sulaiman is not a United States citizen, but is in the country legally, Brennan said. He has ties to Iraq and a juvenile record, he said. Court records also show that Sulaiman was arrested and charged with possession of PCP in Camden County in June. The charge was downgraded to a municipal offense. 

At the time of the alleged attacks, Sulaiman was working at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for defense subcontractor Akima Logistics, which is located on the base. Neal Cooksey, senior corporate counsel for Akima, confirmed that Sulaiman has worked on the base at various times since November 2010 and was an employee at the time of the attack.

Cooksey said Sulaiman was a role player in training exercises to help troops preparing to deploy overseas. Role players help simulate conditions the troops may encounter. Akima Logistics is “a major provider of role-player and foreign-language-speaking training support at U.S. Army installations,” according to its website.

Jacob Brodetsky, 43, of Cherry Hill, was filling gas tanks when Sulaiman exited a station bathroom and stabbed him in the neck, shoulder and back. Brodetsky was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton and at one point was in critical condition. He has since been released, authorities said. Sulaiman also attacked a station attendant, Amarbir Singh, 26, of East Windsor, who tried to assist Brodetsky, authorities said. Singh was not hurt.

Sulaiman is believed to have driven north on Route 206 to Bordentown Regional Middle School on Dunns Mill Road after the alleged stabbing.
