ISIS Defended by Muslim News Network with U.S. Presence

A television host for the Qatar-owned Al-Jazeera is referring to the west’s fight against ISIS as a “new crusade”. This is clearly an attempt at moral equivalency on par with Hamas and Israel sharing the same mutually justified grievances. It’s also apparent that when such figures use the term “crusade”, it is meant to be derogatory:

An Al Jazeera TV host, writing in the Qatari media, has called the Western coalition campaign against Islamic State a “new crusade,” reminiscent of the one that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The Al-Watan newspaper ran an op-ed on Sunday by Al Jazeera host Ahmed Mansour, who said that the Western media coverage of late has focused on “their industry” of making enemies, namely the Islamic State.

This is being done just as it was in the past regarding al-Qaida, the Taliban, Saddam Hussein, and Osama bin Laden, he said.

Mansour accused the “extreme Right” in Britain of “corresponding” to the Islamic State in terms of extremism.

This shouldn’t be surprising but the U.S. and Qatar have been fostering an incestuous relationship for years under the guise of being allies. This would be the same Al-Jazeera that Al Gore sold CURRENT TV to in 2013, which became Al-Jazeera America.

Al-Jazeera English also chimed in on the aforementioned issue. Though a bit more watered down, the sentiment is clearly about defending ISIS:

The English version of Al Jazeera ran an article by Donatella Della Ratta last week titled, “ISIL and Western media: accidental allies?” in which she writes that the Western press is exaggerating Islamic State’s social media presence.

Della Ratta cites “Arab analysts” who blame the creation of Islamic State on the West and its colonialism.

Last year, Shoebat was a signatory in a letter to House Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) in response to the deal that allowed CURRENT TV to be sold to Al-Jazeera. The purpose of the letter was to get the committee to hold hearings; that never happened.

In fact, it was resisted not just by McCaul but by other supposed conservative politicians like Rep. Steve Scalise.

When Al-Jazeera America was officially launched in August of last year, both former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) appeared in the promotional video to give the network credibility.

As Shoebat.com has reported, both Clinton and McCain have a history of being sympathetic to the government of Qatar. In 2011, each attended the U.S.-Islamic World Forum (US-IWF), an annual event co-sponsored by the Brookings Institute and Qatar. That year, the event – usually held in Doha, Qatar where Al-Jazeera is based – was held in Washington, DC.

Also in attendance was Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the deputy to Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Yusuf al-Qaradawi, who lives in Qatar and has had his own program on Al-Jazeera for years.

The US-IWF has historically invited Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers, members and leaders. In fact, none other than al-Qaradawi was a speaker at the 2007 event.

Well, here is a leaked video of an Imam who was giving instructions to Muslim worshippers following what we stated in the ISIS Manifesto to the T. He explains right from his laptop the teaching we wrote about in detail on what a Muslim is ordered to do:

The ISIS MANIFESTO: What Every American Needs To Know About ISIS Plan To Kill ‘Ten Million Americans’

An Isis spokesman has posted a call to arms for Muslims around the world to kill American, Canadian and European citizens for their governments’ role in a coalition against ISIS. But what the average American is unaware of are the ISIS more shocking Islamic injunctions that permit Muslims everywhere to carry out killings by ordering them to cause as much as ten million American casualties which we included training videos that circulates the social media for use by the Muslim community under the nose of the FBI which they refuse to do anything about.

And while the average American got used to learning what Jihad meant, there is more shocking Islamic jurisprudence needed in order to understand what is at hand which circulates the social media to prepare Muslims to do indiscriminate killing of Americans. For the first time, perhaps Americans can see such rules of engagement regarding Jihad Al-Radi’ (Repulse Jihad) and Jihad Tabyeet (Jihad by perfecting the killing methods). Here, enter the world of American slumber, whether by naïveté or by design, you decide.

Following Australia’s largest terror raids and France’s first air strikes on ISIS, spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani ash-Shami called on supporters to launch insider attacks on western populations:

If you can kill a disbelieving American or European – especially the spiteful and filthy French – or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever … including the citizens of the countries that entered into a coalition against the Islamic State, then rely upon Allah, and kill him in any manner or way however it may be,”

He added:

“You will not be safe, even in your own bedrooms while you sleep. Your Crusader campaign will fail. You will pay the price and we will hit you on your home front in a way that will cripple you to never extend your long arm ever again.” (see minute 18:50)

This is what ISIS declared its 42-minute speech released on social media.

So where does the Fatwa and Islamic injunction calling for such killing come from and to what extent of destruction is ISIS and their supporters demanded to do?

Shoebat.com has translated more of the horrifying and extremely disturbing content of the Fatwa used by ISIS written in full by Nasr Al-Fahd, a Saudi theologian calling for the complete annihilation of the United States. Shoebat.com reviewed the 26 page Fatwa [link here] which was never translated for public study by the government showing the true colors of Islam including that such killing has already began.

The inception of this Fatwa began when terrorists wrote the scholar requesting a Fatwa on the issue of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Nasr Al-Fahd responds:

“Peace, mercy and blessings of God. It is no secret what was published in the media about the intention to hit America with weapons of mass Destruction. So what is the Fatwa ruling for the Mujahideen to use these? Is it permissible at all? Is it the Mother of necessity? … This issue, needs a complete message; and gathering from evidence and scholarly sources to the question regarding The House of War and how to practice Jihad-u-Dafi’ (Repulse Jihad) and the meaning of destruction of crops including reproduction of life (children) religiously, and so on which I will collect what was given by Allah’s will”. (Page 2)

In what Islam calls Repulse Jihad, which is basically using weapons of mass destruction, which was known in Islamic warfare, to put a complete stop and end of the enemy once and for all. ISIS then gives the response:

“If the infidels cannot be repulsed from the Muslims except by resorting to using such weapons, then it may be used even if it killed and wiped them out completely including decimating their crops and their descendants. I will include the details in my letter I mentioned. Therefore the question is asked and the answer is given and the matter is closed and concluded. (see Page #2)”

The letter and the details is what every ISIS leader carries on his laptop and is what is disseminated to their operatives globally. But its also quite widespread on the social network media in Arabic and that laptop discovery should not be shocking at all. It is what ISIS uses as well as several Jihadi networks who post the teachings for general public use for all Muslims residing in western societies.

On page 5, what westerns do not understand when they ask “why” and “what type of human being can kill indiscriminately”, ISIS explains the first lesson in such killing is that its what they term Ihsan, in English, it is “The act of kindness and charity”.

What ISIS sees from their perspective is that killing Americans is an act of mercy:

“Ibn Rajab said regarding Allah’s mercy in his collection on science and governance, p 112: “in charity it is permissible to kill people and animals in the easiest way and do not increase in the torture and the easiest method to kill a human being is to strike off the neck with the sword of violence in accordance to the Quran when “you meet the unbelievers then strike off their necks”(Quran) “فإذالقيتمالذينكفروافضربالرقاب” and it also said: “I will spread horror/terror in the hearts of the unbelievers, smite above their necks and smite there fingertips thereof” (see Page 5)

The act of killing the infidel is an act of mercy in Islam in which the unbeliever is treated like a sacrificial offering to Allah.

On page 8, the ISIS manifesto discusses the Fatwa on using weapons of mass destruction to permit the killing of Ten Million Americans:

القسم الأول: أدلة خاصة لعصر معين ولعدو معين:
وذلك مثل حال أمريكا في هذا الزمن؛ فإن مسألة ضربها بهذه الأسلحة جائز بدون ذكر أدلة القسم الثاني التالية (أدلة المشروعية العامة)؛ لأن الله سبحانه يقول (وإن عاقبتم فعاقبوا بمثل ما عوقبتم به)، ويقول تعالى: (فمن اعتدى عليكم فاعتدوا عليه بمثل ما اعتدى عليكم)، ويقول تعالى: (وجزاء سيئة سيئة مثلها)، والناظر في اعتداءات أمريكا على المسلمين وأراضيهم خلال العقود الماضية يخلص إلى جواز ذلك بالاستناد إلى باب (المعاملة بالمثل) فقط؛ بدون حاجة إلى ذكر الأدلة الأخرى، وقد جمع بعض الإخوة عدد قتلاهم من المسلمين بأسلحتهم المباشرة وغير المباشرة فوصل العدد إلى قريب من عشرة ملايين، وأما الأراضي التي أحرقتها قنابلهم ومتفجراتهم وصواريخهم فلا يحصيها إلا الله، وآخر ما عايناه ما حصل في أفغانستان والعراق، وهذا غير ما سببت حروبهم على كثير من المسلمين من التشرد، فلو ألقيت عليهم قنبلة تهلك منهم عشرة ملايين، وتحرق من أراضيهم قدر ما أحرقوا من أراضي المسلمين كان هذا جائزا بلا حاجة إلى ذكر أي دليل آخر، وإنما
الأدلة الأخرى قد نحتاجها لو أردنا أن نهلك منهم أكثر من هذا العدد!!

English:

Section I: evidence for an age to use specific weapons for a particular enemy:
And so like if America at this time; the issue to hit with these weapons [mass destruction] is permissible without mentioning the evidence of the second section the following (evidence of general legality); because Allah Almighty says “to punish in similar fashion as you were afflicted”, and the Almighty says “Attack who attacks you in similar ways as you were attacked,” and the Almighty says “Pay evil with evil,” so the observer sees American aggression on Muslims and their lands during the past decades concludes the permission to use aggression with reciprocity only as has been collected by some of the brothers the number of dead from amongst the Muslims with their weapons of direct and indirect, methods to bring the number close to ten million. And as for the lands that [America] burned with their bombs and their explosives and rockets not one can enumerate except Allah, and whatever else happened in Afghanistan and Iraq, and this is what caused the wars on many of the Muslims causing homelessness. So if bomb is launched at them that will kill ten million of them, and it will burn their land as much as they burned the Muslim lands this is therefore permissible without the need to mention any other evidence, but other evidence may be needed if we are to perish of them more than this number!

In ISIS view the Muslim is to avenge for all Muslim deaths including even Hiroshima and Nagasaki to avenge all the killings caused by the United States using nuclear bombs.

Since in the meaning of Tabyeet is that if you kill, do it well …And it is permissible to kill them therefore even if amongst them are women and children since this is included in Tabyeet“

There is much more to translate from this 26 page document littered with horrific declarations and is strictly pointing to the United States from mass killing to spreading disease to utter destruction of human life in masse.

It takes pages to provide all the rulings from the top Muslim jurisprudence. One example is from Al-Sarkhasi #4111/1:

” قال السرخسي نقلا عن محمد بن الحسن (شرح السير الكبير 4111/1):
(قال: ولا بأس للمسلمين أن يحرقوا حصون المشركين بالنار، أو يغرقوها بالماء، وأن ينصبوا عليها المجاني ، وأن يقطعوا عنهم الماء، وأن يجعلوا في مائهم الدم والعذرة والسم حتى يفسدوه
عليهم، لأنا أمرنا بقهرهم وكسر شوكتهم؛”

English:

“Sarkhasi said, quoting Muhammad ibn al-Hasan in his “The Explanation of the Major Hadith” #4111/1:
He said: “There is nothing wrong for Muslims to burn the infidels fortresses with fire, or to drown them with water and poison them and cut off their water, and to make their water bitter by pouring blood and menstrual blood and poison until they spoil it for them because we were ordered to belittle them and to break their unity”

So many were the references from top Muslim jurisprudence is used from Islamic Sharia and we will mention but few like Ibin Hazm #311/6 (ابن حزم في (المحلى 311/6) to justify destroying farm lands, crops, trees . Al-Rahibani #641 (الرحيباني في مطالب ا641) Ibn Qadameh Al-Mughni #431/5 (ابن قدامة (المغني and Sana’ani in his “The Way To Peace” (431/5) ,   قال الصنعاني في (سبل السلام 64/1) in which the Prophet of Islam justified the complete burning of the palm trees of the Jewish tribe of Banu Nazeer. Even Muslims, their blood is permissible to shed regardless so long they live in the United States. The Fatwa sited Al-A’badi from his Al-Jawhara Al-Nayira (The Bright Jewel) #218/2 (العبادي الحنفي (الجوهرة النيرة 218/2. (See page 25 in the Fatwa).

The laptop which this manifesto was found which was seized from an Isis base in Syria contains plans to launch devastating terror attacks also contains instructions on how to build explosives, use disguises to travel undetected, and plans to build chemical weapons.

“The advantage of biological weapons is that they do not cost a lot of money, while the human casualties can be huge,” a document retrieved from the computer stated.

But such finds are nothing new. In fact, recently, Shoebat.com sent out an SOS regarding such plans posted on YouTube which they (YouTube) refused to delete. These plans included how to execute them with full detail step-by-step videos not only on bomb making, rocket making and how to kill and destroy life and infrastructure but on how to step-by-step methods to manufacture RDX and C4 very highly explosives including 82 detailed complete lessons on how to manufacture RPG rockets from beginning to end including the launchers and Qassam rockets, the type that is lobbed by Hamas on Israel. We even asked THE CITIZEN (you) to flag and warn and call the FBI (http://www.fbi.gov) and fight to remove this evil, but to no avail. In our report, we even showed a glimpse of what we were revealing:

But all this is only a fraction of what we found for terror aid, that YouTube allows.

It is only a matter of time before the killings will commence at a higher scale, but as usual, we are only called after the fact to come and give our views to the stupid (conservative and liberal) American media which has not yet learned that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

3 Afghan Army, 2 Afghan DEA who fled U.S. training assignments caught

via 3 Afghan Army officers missing from U.S. base in custody at Canada-U.S. border – World – CBC News.

Three Afghanistan National Army officers who went missing during a training exercise at a Cape Cod military base were detained Monday at the U.S.-Canadian border, Massachusetts law enforcement officials said.

Massachusetts state police were notified that the three were being questioned by federal authorities at Rainbow Bridge, which connects Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Niagara Falls, Ont., said spokesman David Procopio, who did not have further details.

There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Niagara Falls said they didn’t have the men in custody. Messages left for Canada Border Services Agency weren’t immediately returned.

CBS reports They were transferred to U.S. custody Monday night.

Military officials said the Afghan soldiers had been participating in a U.S. Central Command Regional Co-operation training exercise at Joint Base Cape Cod. They arrived at Camp Edwards on Sept. 11 and were last seen Saturday at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis during an off day.

 The soldiers were reported missing by base security personnel Saturday night. They were identified as Maj. Jan Mohammad Arash, Capt. Mohammad Nasir Askarzada and Capt. Noorullah Aminyar.

 Gov. Deval Patrick, who had been briefed over the weekend on the situation, said earlier Monday that the military did not believe the three soldiers posed a danger to the public.

 They were vetted by the military. They were cleared by the military,” Patrick told reporters while he visited a preschool program in Quincy.

 “There is a lot of speculation within the military that they may be trying to defect,” he said.

 Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said earlier that 14 Afghans taking part in the Cape Cod military exercise were “thoroughly vetted” prior to coming to the U.S., so officials do not believe they are a threat.

 The Regional Co-operation training exercises have been held annually since 2004 to promote co-operation and interoperability among forces, build functional capacity, practice peacekeeping operations and enhance readiness.

This year’s exercise, which involves more than 200 participants from six nations including the U.S., is scheduled to wrap up Wednesday. Military officials from Tajikistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia are also participants.

The two DEA trainees are reportedly being sent home, via Afghan nationals who disappeared in D.C. while training with DEA found, being sent home | WJLA.com.

WASHINGTON (WJLA) — Two Afghan policemen who were in the D.C. area for drug trafficking training and vanished last weekend in Georgetown have now been found, the Drug Enforcement Administration told ABC7 News on Friday.

The two men – Mohammad Yasin Ataye, 22, and Mohd Naweed Samimi, 24 – were found safe somewhere outside of D.C., but officials would not say exactly where.

The pair were part of a group of 31 Afghan police officers who were in the U.S. for a multi-week DEA training program at Quantico, Va. They disappeared while the group was on a DEA-supervised sightseeing trip to Georgetown.

The DEA said the two men separated from the group and left because they did not want to go back to Afghanistan.

The other Afghan officers graduated the DEA program and were due to return home Friday night. These two men were being sent home along with the rest of the group, the DEA said.

In an audio recording distributed widely on social media Sunday, Islamic extremist group ISIS urged Muslims globally to launch attacks on civilians in member countries of a U.S.-led coalition opposed to their violent spread through areas of Syria and Iraq.

In the nearly 42-minute long meandering propaganda speech uploaded to Twitter, ISIS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani encourages Muslims to kill “disbelievers” in countries, including Canada, currently supporting American and French-backed military action against the group in Iraq “in any manner.”

“If you can kill a disbelieving American or European — especially the spiteful and filthy French — or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever from the disbelievers waging war, including the citizens of the countries that entered into a coalition against the Islamic State … kill him in any manner or way however it may be,” said Adnani.

Threats made in the audio recording mirror those ISIS has made in other propaganda releases, including during the grisly beheading videos of two American journalists, James Foley and Stephen Sotloff, and British aid worker David Haines.

Adnani blamed Western allies for instigating a war against the terrorist group, and said the ongoing air incursions against ISIS positions in Iraq will be “the final campaign of the crusaders.”

Unlike other terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, ISIS has established a widespread presence on social networks, using highly produced videos and audio recordings in an effort to recruit new fighters from abroad and intimidate those opposed to their murderous agenda.

What just happened in a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee…

There have been numerous news reports over the last week — including several posts here at Western Journalism — strongly indicating that the Obama administration does not have a consistent, coherent policy for combating the Islamic State. What just happened in a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee will only serve to reinforce that perception of confusion within the ranks of Obama’s top officials.

Fox News reports that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs — America’s top military leader — has raised the distinct possibility of U.S. “boots on the ground” in the expanding fight against ISIS in the Middle East.

In testimony before Congress, Gen. Martin Dempsey seemed to contradict — or at the very least to undermine — what the Command-in-Chief, his boss, Barack Obama — has consistently promised.

The top U.S. military leader opened the door Tuesday to U.S. troops on the ground in the fight against the Islamic State, testifying before Congress that he could recommend “U.S. military ground forces” if the international coalition being formed proves ineffective against the terror group.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey made the statement during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Though President Obama vowed last week that the U.S. would “not get dragged into another ground war in Iraq” and military leaders say ground troops are not needed at the moment, Dempsey said he could change his recommendation if he found circumstances “evolving” in the region.

USA Today reports on Dempsey’s specific statement before the Senate panel:

“To be clear, if we reach the point where I believe our advisers should accompany Iraqi troops on attacks against specific ISIL targets, I will recommend that to the president,” said Dempsey.

As Fox News reports, many military leaders as well as lawmakers have expressed concern about the president’s recent speech in which he essentially ruled out the deployment of U.S. war fighters in combat roles against ISIS. Gen. Dempsey’s testimony underscored that divide:

The statement comes as the administration faces a deep divide in Congress that muddies traditional partisan lines over the possibility of ground forces being introduced. Many Democrats and Republicans oppose U.S. combat troops entering the fight. But some Republican lawmakers have criticized the president for appearing to rule out that option.

“ISIS is an army,” Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., top Republican on the committee, said Tuesday. “It will take an army to beat an army.”

This is why Obama doesn’t want American troops in Iraq, because the ISIS army will be destroyed, and that will mess up the MB’s plans for world domination, as well as put Obama in a bad place with allah, his god, because he would be having Muslims killed, and allah satan allah don’t like that, in which he commanded that no Muslim can kill another Muslim. Why do Muslims kill Muslims now? you might ask…well, it because the Muslims do not agree on a few denomination/sect things (I.E. the Sunni, Shi’ite, Sufi and Wahhabi)…thus, in their interpretations each faction does not follow what Mohammed mandated to them, that would make, in their interpretations, the other factions as apostates and thus, enemies, so that makes it ok for them to kill fellow Muslims…it is like the Catholics and the Protestants in Ireland…they both strive to serve God, but because there is a difference in interpretations of Scripture, they kill each other…so Obama doesn’t want to upset allah because Obama is trying to ascertain the title of the mahdi.

This is why he did not have any plans set up if ISIS attacked the US…that is part of the reason for the amnesty bill…so millions of Muslim, largely of the jihadist persuasion, to come to America and fulfill what the MB promised they would do in 1991…take over America with the help of a Trojan horse president.

NEW YORK CITY— A New York radio personality is calling for increased attention to the June murder of a 19-year-old Livingston man, calling it evidence that “domestic terrorism is already here.”

Todd Pettengill, host of WPLJ’s “The Todd Show”, discussed the death of Brendan Tevlin for more than eight minutes this morning, asking why the case has not received more attention despite the alleged murderer’s admissions that he killed Tevlin as an act of vengeance for U.S. military actions in the Middle East.

“It was in fact an act of jihad, perpetrated by a fellow American who sympathized more with those who want to annihilate us than with his own country and its people,” he said.

Essex County authorities have charged 29-year-old Ali Muhammad Brown with killing Tevlin in a West Orange intersection on June 25. Since being taken into custody on July 18, he has confessed to the murder, along with three others in Washington state, saying they were carried out as retribution for innocent lives lost in Iraq, Syria and other parts of the Islamic world.

Pettengil criticized President Barack Obama and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder for not referencing the case in recent addresses and downplaying the level of threat radical Islamists currently living in America could pose.

He also chided the media for not bringing the story to the national stage, and focusing instead on other protests such as those in Ferguson, Mo., where an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, was shot to death by a police officer last month.

“If there was ever a reason to riot in the streets in the name of humanity it would for this case. But has that happened? No. And I’m not suggesting that it should,” he said.

Pettengil also echoed the frustrations of Tevlin’s parents over the initial characterization by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office that the teenager was “targeted” before being gunned down in a West Orange intersection on June 25.

Authorities later walked back the description, saying accused murderer Ali Muhammad Brown and two other men, Jeremy Villagran and Eric Williams, had randomly targeted Tevlin for a robbery before Brown shot him eight times.

A fourth man may have also fled the scene of the murder, according to prosecutors, but he has not been identified or named as a suspect.

Pettengill closed his statement by reminding listeners that they should acknowledge the threats the country faces from terrorists both overseas and at home.

“The bottom line is this, domestic terrorism is already here, and we need to talk about it,” he said.

A Minnesota youth center is at the heart of a federal grand jury investigation into a suspected ISIS terrorist pipeline.

The FBI says that someone on the ground in Minnesota is convincing young people to join the terror fight in Syria, then giving them money to get there.

Up to 30 Somali-Americans who have reportedly joined or tried to join terrorist groups overseas had attended Al Farooq Youth and Family Center in Minnesota. That’s the same mosque that kicked out 31-year-old Amir Meshal this summer for allegedly proselytizing radical Islam ideologies.

Islamists In America: Skilled at Hiding Common Roots

Having Islamists in the coalition and infighting between Shiite and Sunnis are just two of the problems that could derail Obama’s strategy.

President Obama announced a four-part strategy to “destroy” the Islamic State terrorist group, commonly known as ISIS or ISIL. It consists of U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, support for Iraqis and Syrians fighting the group, international counterterrorism cooperation and humanitarian aid.

This is a broad strategy that could succeed in eliminating the group’s safe havens. There are four problems ahead that the U.S. and its coalition of over 40 countries must expect:

Radical Shiite Influence Ends Sunni Cooperation

Iraqi Sunni tribes have pledged to work with the Iraqi government in fighting the Islamic State and the U.S. is in communication with them. Over 25 Sunni tribes are now fighting the Islamic State and are even working with the Iraqi military around the town of Haditha despite their adversarial relationship.

The formation of a new and more inclusive Iraqi government is being described as a “milestone” by the U.S. Sunnis appear receptive to the new government, at least for the moment, but their cooperation could cease with any indication of sectarianism, Iranian puppetry or use of radical Shiite militias in areas where Sunnis live.

The breakdown in the relationship between the Iraqi Sunnis and the Shiite-majority Iraqi government provided the critical opening for the Islamic State. Tension will arise if the Iraqi government chooses to give the post of Interior Minister to Haid al-Ameri, leader of the Iran-backed Badr Organization that has a militia.

If Iranian-linked militias grow in power and are seen as extensions of the Iraqi government, then cooperation with Iraqi security forces will end. Shiite militiamen massacred 73 Sunni civilians at a mosque in Baqubah last month, causing Sunni leaders to suspend talks on forming the new government.

Sunnis are much less likely to fight the Islamic State if they believe the Sunni terrorists will be replaced with even more hostile Shiite extremists. Acts of sectarian violence and oppression could cause Sunni tribes to embrace radical forces and some could even come to see the Islamic State as protectors and try to reconcile with them.

Iranian-backed militias and terrorists could also unravel cooperation between the Kurdish Peshmerga and the Iraqi government. Iran was the first country to arm the Kurds against the Islamic State, but the Kurds would prefer to ally with the U.S.

The Islamic State’s siege of Amerli was broken by U.S. airstrikes and two Iran-linked militias that the U.S. considers to be terrorist groups: the Hezbollah Brigades and Asiab al-Haq. Though Kurds worked with these militias, they are calling them the “Shiite Islamic State.”  The Hezbollah Brigades are refusing to let the Peshmerga into Amerli and are burning homes of Sunnis suspected of belonging to the Islamic State.

Any successful strategy for Iraq must include limiting Iranian influence and the long-term disbanding of radical Shiite militias.

“Moderate” Syrian Rebels

There are Syrian opposition figures who want to topple the Assad regime and defeat the Islamists so that a secular democracy with separation of mosque and state can follow. Kamal al-Labwani, a major opposition leader, is one example. Clarion Project interviewed al-Labwani in April 2012.

Removing the Islamic State from Syria would require some kind of force on the ground. Supporting moderate rebels is the only option since the Assad regime also sponsors terrorism and is an ally of Iran. However, Islamist radicals dominate the armed rebel forces that would fight the Islamic State.

In April 2013, the New York Times reported, “Nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of.” As of June 2013, 10 of 12 rebel groups were Islamist.

Of the two that are not Islamist, one consists of the Kurds, who have PKK terrorists among them. The second one is the Free Syria Army (FSA), which has Islamist factions fighting in its name. Any arms given to the FSA could pass into unsavory hands because the FSA collaborates with Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch. Further, many FSA fighters have switched sides and joined al-Nusra.

Time and time again, “moderate” Syrian rebel political leadership has been linked to Islamists. Ghassan Hitto, the former prime minister of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, was linked to the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood network and backed by the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. He was rejected by the FSA, but the point remains that the rebels have a major Islamist component.

Prominent pro-rebel groups in the U.S. also cannot be relied upon. The Syria Support Group, the only group licensed by the U.S. to provide material support to the FSA, has Islamist links. It has gotten at least $12 million in U.S. government aid.

The leader of the Syrian Emergency Taskforce supports the Islamic Front, a coalition of Salafists that want to institute sharia governance, some of whom work with al-Nusra. An Islamic Front-aligned cleric has raised millions of dollars in the U.S. The Front’s takeover of FSA bases in December prompted the U.S. and U.K. to suspend non-lethal aid to the Syrian rebels.

Another radical cleric came to America on a fundraising tour with the Syrian American Council. This organization has officials that used to belong to the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. It opposed the designation of Jabhat al-Nusra as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department.

Pro-Islamist Allies in the Coalition

The U.S. must also be prepared for the pro-Islamist members of its coalition against the Islamic State to predictably support Islamism.

Secular Syrian opposition figures complain that Qatar and Turkey are sidelining them by supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. When the U.S. worked with Qatar in removing the Qaddafi regime in Libya, Qatar exercised its influence to benefit the Islamist forces. Libya is experiencing bloody fighting between Islamist and secular forces today.

Qatar continues to support the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and the Islamic Front, specifically Ahrar al-Sham. An Ahrar al-Sham leader named Abu Khaled al-Souri had high-level Al-Qaeda ties and was killed by the Islamic State. Jabhat al-Nusra and other Al-Qaeda-linked figures see Qatar as friendly territory.

Saudi Arabia, which has agreed to help support rebels fighting the Islamic State, has already been supporting the Islamic Front, specifically Zahran Alloush’s Army of Islam (or Jaysh al-Islam). His ideology is similar to that of Al-Qaeda/Jabhat al-Nusra.

The Saudis also back a coalition named the Syrian Revolutionary Council. It condemned the United Kingdom for sentencing Islamist cleric Raed Salah for inciting terrorism. He was previously imprisoned in Israel for financing Hamas and working with an Iranian intelligence operative.

The Meaning of Combat Troops

President Obama announced that an additional 475 U.S. troops are going to Iraq to assist Iraqi and Kurdish forces. This raises the number of U.S. troops in Iraq to 1,600, but President Obama is adamant that they won’t play a combat role.

The scope of their mission may not include combat operations, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll avoid combat. Islamic State supporters have incessantly expressed their eagerness on social media for U.S. troops to come fight in Iraq.

All Americans in Iraq, especially soldiers in any role, are a top target of the Islamic State. These soldiers won’t be on the frontline, but they will be at risk. The Islamic State will try to attack them at their bases.

Just as Afghan soldiers and policemen have attacked U.S. soldiers in “green-on-blue” attacks, Islamic State may have sympathizers ready to do the same to U.S. troops in Iraq. And if American soldiers are attacked, they will be equipped and ready to defend themselves — in other words, engage in combat.

Should American soldiers come under attack, President Obama will face the difficult task of articulating how having troops in combat is not a violation of his pledge.

Conclusion

Before President Obama’s address, a CNN poll found that 76% of Americans support airstrikes on the Islamic State and only 23% oppose them. In addition, close to 62% favor military aid to those fighting the Islamic State, a dip in support likely reflective of American concerns about arming the wrong actors.

A Washington Post poll found that 71% of Americans support bombing the Islamic State in Iraq and 65% support doing so in Syria. About 58% want to arm the Kurds.

These polls indicate broad support for the announced strategy. However, Americans opinions have not been tested by stories of setbacks and possible American casualties.

If the U.S. government is to wage a successful campaign against the Islamic State and maintain American support, it must prepare to deal with the problems above.
