Turkey’s foreign minister issues warning, says ‘Holy wars will soon begin in Europe’

Turkey has increased tensions with Europe after the country’s foreign minister said the continent is heading towards a holy war.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, 49, who has been part of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration since December 2013, fanned an already volatile situation when he said all the Dutch parties running for election on Thursday 15th shared the same anti-Islamic views held by Geert Wilders, who is head of the PVV, and so it did not matter who had won.

The Netherlands’ incumbent prime minister Mark Rutte successfully fended off the challenge of Mr. Wilders who had stood on an anti-EU, anti-Muslim ticket.

Throughout the campaign Mr. Rutte had steadfastly refused to work with Mr. Wilders due to his views.

Speaking at a rally in the southern city of Antalya, Mr. Cavusoglu said: “Many parties have received a similar share of votes. 17 per cent, 20 per cent, there are lots of parties like this, but they are all the same.

“Now the election is over in the Netherlands… when you look at the many parties you see there is no difference between the mindsets of Geert Wilders and social democrats in the Netherlands. They all have the same mindset… That mindset is taking Europe to the cliff. You have begun to collapse Europe. You are dragging Europe into the abyss. Holy wars will soon begin in Europe.”

BOSTON — U.S. authorities are still piecing together how the two brothers behind April’s Boston Marathon bombing — Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev — became Islamic terrorists.

Tamerlan had traveled to al Qaeda hotbeds in southern Russia, where authorities believe he may have met with known jihadists.

Closer to home, he and his brother attended a Boston-area mosque with radical ties.

“The fact is that these fellows attended, blocks from their house, a radical mosque that has been the center of controversy in Boston for 10 years,” said Charles Jacobs, who heads Americans for Peace and Tolerance, a group that has closely monitored Islamic radicalism in the Boston area.

Jacobs told CBN News the Islamic Society of Boston mosque in Cambridge has seen convicted Islamic terrorists pass through its doors.

“The founder of that mosque, blocks from where the Tsarnaevs lived and where they prayed, was Abdulrahman Alamoudi,” he said. “He is the model of deception in American-Muslim history…”

“He…convinced President Clinton and also President George W. Bush that he was precisely the kind of moderate Muslim leader that America was looking for,” Jacobs said. “In fact, he deceived everyone. He’s now in jail for 23 years for giving money, for funding al Qaeda.

Other worshipers at the Cambridge mosque have included these Islamists:

• Aafia Siddiqui, an al Qaeda member convicted of plotting attacks on New York City
• Tarek Mahenna, sentenced to 17 years in prison for planning to assault a Boston-area shopping mall with automatic weapons

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a former trustee of the mosque, is a Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader and terrorist supporter who’s banned from entering the United States.

Jacobs stressed that it’s unclear whether the mosque played any role in the Tsarnaev brothers’ radicalization.

But CBN News spoke to one moderate Muslim leader who visited the mosque with his wife in 2003 and was shocked by what he found.

“We go upstairs and I find the library and it’s full of flyers, full of newsletters in Arabic,” Dr. Ahmed Mansour of the International Qur’anic Institute explained. “And they call for jihad against America and against the Jews and against the Christians,” he said. “…at that time, there was a sheikh giving a sermon, and the sheikh was as fanatical as the written materials.”

US Arm of the Brotherhood

The group behind the Cambridge mosque is called the Muslim American Society, or MAS. It was founded in 1993 by Muslim Brotherhood members and has dozens of chapters throughout the United States.

Federal prosecutors have called MAS “the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in America.”

Its ties to the Brotherhood — a group dedicated to establishing Islamic sharia law worldwide — have not stopped MAS from expanding in Boston.

In 2009, it opened another mosque in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, just a few miles from the Cambridge location.

That mosque, called the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, is the second largest mosque on the entire East Coast. It cost over $15.5 million to build — and more than half of that money reportedly came from Saudi Arabia.

The Roxbury mega-mosque is the sister mosque to the one in Cambridge.

“They share the exact same leadership,” Jacobs said. “They’re owned by the same people, the Muslim American Society. The trustees are the same. They may have different day-to-day managements, but it’s the same.”

Jacobs says the two MAS mosques also share the same radical, Muslim Brotherhood ideology.

Mass. Governor Endorses Mosque

Yet Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino both endorsed the Roxbury mosque when it opened in 2009.

Jacobs’ organization released a video showing Patrick publicly embracing a controversial imam at a 2010 event at the mosque.

During a sermon just two months prior, that imam, Abdullah Farooq, had seemingly encouraged worshipers to engage in violence when supporting Muslims who have been arrested on terrorism charges.

“Grab onto the typewriter, grab onto the shovel, grab onto the gun and the sword,” Farooq implored. “Don’t be afraid to step out into this world and do your job.”

Too Little, Too Late?

Jacobs was encouraged recently when Gov. Patrick disinvited the imam of the Roxbury mosque from an event honoring the victims of the Boston Marathon terror attack.

But he says the damage is done in Boston and other cities where mega-mosques tied to the Muslim Brotherhood are being built.

The number of mosques in America nearly doubled between 2001 and 2011.

“When a Muslim group goes in any city and asks the mayor for help to build a mosque or to support them in building a mosque, the mayor only has one way of thinking about this: that this is another vulnerable minority that must be protected.” Jacobs said.

“And if you question them, even if you question them, you’re a racist, Islamophobic bigot,” Jacobs continued. “You can’t possibly raise the question that these people are not who they say they are.”

CBN News requested an interview with representatives of the Roxbury mosque but received no response. A spokeswoman for the Cambridge mosque declined an interview due to health reasons.

Local Muslim sources told CBN News that followers of the Muslim Brotherhood have also tried to take over other mosques in the Boston area.

Dr. Mansour calls it a nationwide problem.

“They are using the American Constitution, the American values, of freedom of belief and freedom of speech-and the American mosques,” he warned.

PRELIMINARY STATEMENT

This is an action against Martin J. Mawyer, Christian Action Network, and Patti A. Pierucci defendants, for the malicious, repetitious, and continuous, pronouncements and publication of defamatory statements against Plaintiff. The provocative and defamatory statements were included in the book: Twilight in America~ the Untold Story of Islamic Terrorist Training Camps in America, authored by Martin J. Mawyer and Patti Pierucci, (October 2012), uttered by Mawyer on various media outlets including Fox News (October 2012) and posted on CAN’s website http://www.christianaction.org at various dates and times.

Plaintiff has sustained substantial, incalculable and irreparable harm, contempt, and ridicule to reputation, resulting from the unrelenting false and negative spotlight projected on them by defendants. Defendants’ defamatory statements have served to cause fear and hatred to flourish against Plaintiff while inciting violence and putting the lives of Plaintiffs members in danger for the purpose of monetary enrichment. Plaintiff seeks injunction relief preventing further publication and sale of Twilight, retraction of all defamatory statements regarding Plaintiff on CAN’s official website, and Attorney’s fees and cost.

STATEMENT OF FACTS

Plaintiff and its congregation are the victims of relentless and pernicious defamation by defendants through the use of the CAN website and the publication of Twilight.

Prior to its official formation, Plaintiff was a Muslim congregation situated within the heart of inner city communities and exposed to all of their horrors and devastating effects. In an attempt to remove and protect itself from the immoral effect and pitfalls of this worsening environment, Plaintiff invested in 60 acres of rural property in Hancock, New York for the purpose of providing a safe haven for American Muslims to raise families while establishing a peaceful community free from harmful elements such as those occurring in the inner cities in the 19805.

Plaintiff’s members currently live throughout North America including in twelve rural communities located in Georgia, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, Canada, and Trinidad. 14. Plaintiffs owns two parcels of land in New York.

At all-time herein Plaintiff has counseled and encouraged its members and residents of its villages to abide by the laws of the United States and avoid criminal, immoral, and anti-social behavior. Members of the plaintiffs congregation are well educated and successful. Among the community there are lawyers, physicians, engineers, nurse practitioners, educators, tradesmen, farmers and business people.

All locations hold regular events which are opened to the public. The events include workshops, seminars, children’s activities and interfaith outreach. One of the most widely attended events takes place annually and celebrates the commonality between Muslims and Christians. MOA has launched an initiative called the United Muslim Christian Forum.

Defendants Mawyer and CAN have devoted the past decade to waging excessive divisive and intolerable attacks against Plaintiff. These nefarious, malicious, and systematic attacks perpetrated against Plaintiff were supported through the use of media, including documentaries, books, and the internet. Upon information and belief since the early 2000s, Defendants have systemically engaged in a series of harassing behaviors toward the plaintiff including but not limited to:

a.) During November of 2006, Mawyer unsuccessfully launched a hostile and inflamed protest against the naming of the private road leading onto property where members of MOA lived in Red House, VA.

b.) During this same period defendants Mawyer and CAN arranged for bundles of 2,500 leaflets titled “Get Rid of Sheikh Gilani lane” to be dropped from a low flying airplane onto the Red House, Virginia property of one of Plaintiffs members. 

The materials were produced by CAN. It did so without regard for the safety of the children who were playing in their yards. Mawyer further claimed in a press release that ” …any group that will dare drop 2,500 fliers over a terrorist compound is not backing down anytime soon.

Defendants escalated its conduct and by 2009 Mawyer released the so-called documentary, Homegrown Jihad: Terrorist camps Around U.S. This publication signaled a surge in focus by Mawyer and CAN who continued their attack against Islam in the United States and against Plaintiff in particular. The basis of Defendants Mawyer and CAN’s attacks against Plaintiff center on their bold, public and false campaign alleging that plaintiff is a murdering, thieving terror organization and runs terror training camps.

To date, Defendant Mawyer has appeared on The O’Reilly Factor, Hannity, Larry King Live, Pat Robertson’s 700 Club, NBC’s Today Show, Entertainment Tonight and Fox and Friends where he continues spreading various sensational, erroneous theories and presents them as fact.

Twilight is a 293-page book authored by Mawyer and co-authored by Pierucci. Twilight’s cover page is a picture containing a backdrop of a cloudy sky with Arabic wording at the top of the page and an eerie splattering of blood across the Arabic. Superimposed in oversized font is the title “Twilight in America” with subtitle in traditional font: ”The Untold Story of Islamic Terrorist Training camps Inside America”. The names of the authors hang over a sliver of the American flag. Please see annexed hereto “Exhibit A.” The deliberate use of the phrase “terrorist training camps in America” in the sub-title of Twilight and on its cover is a calculating reference to property owned by plaintiffs.

The defendants repeatedly accuse the plaintiffs of being “home grown” terrorists or engaging in acts of terrorist. Terror activities are violations of New York State law and the federal code.

 New York State Anti-Terrorism Act of 2001 Article 490 § 490.25 states that a person is guilty of a crime of terrorism when with intent to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the potency of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion, or affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination or kidnapping, he or she commits a specified offense.

That 18 USC §2331 defines domestic terrorism as activities that (A)involve acts dangerous to human life; that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; (B)appear to be intended: (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; {ii)to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; (Hi)or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and (C)occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

Through the cunning use of semantics, Defendants proliferate Twilight with abundant defamatory inferences in the form of “protected opinion”. However, the plaintiff has identified the following comments as exemplars of the publications plaintiff finds actionable:

“Also maddening is the fact that Al Fuqra/MOA had been listed on the State Department’s list of terrorist groups but was removed in the year 2000 after what appeared to be a period of inactivity.” Twilight pg. 230. Please see annexed hereto “Exhibit C”. Plaintiff was never listed on the State Departments list of terrorist groups.

“In the privacy of Muslim compounds across our land they are preparing our own citizens to wage a holy war – jihad – against America. As many state and federal authorities turn a blind eye, these Islamic extremists convert our own citizens, then teach them how to kill.” This entire statement is false and defamatory.

“The women suffer a dismal fate, enslaved to their men forced into polygamous marriages, forced to have as many children as possible, sometimes beaten and raped, all under the banner of religious submission to Islam and the stifling rules of MOA that women must endure.” This entire statement is false and defamatory. In fact, women are treated with honor and respect. The women are well educated and intelligent leaders in their community. The men are not rapists and the women are not raped.

“[Gilani] has created an independent army of jihadists who have been killing their own countrymen for decades.” This statement is false and defamatory. No such “independent army of jihadists” exists and no such thing has ever occurred.

That Defendants stated as fact regarding York County, South Carolina, ….. [That] a 36 acre MOA compound is located, which hosted an array of notorious characters in the jihadist world.” Twilight, pg.236. Please see annexed hereto “Exhibit G”.  This entire allegation is defamatory and false.

“My book details the nearly 30-year history of MOA in America with its crimes, its acts of terrorism and its bold claim to establish Islamic guerrilla warfare training camps across the country.” Emphasis added. Article from Martin Mawyer published on CAN website. MOA does not have and has never established Islamic guerrilla warfare training camps across the country.

“The U.S. State Department has sounded the alarm about this group for years, calling MOA an Islamic group that wants to “purify Islam through violence.” Please see annexed hereto “Exhibit I”. On information and belief, there has been no such proclamation by the U.S. State Department. Defendants attempt to link the Imam of MOA to Daniel Pearl, though the Imam was exonerated of any connection.

Defendants attempt to draw a connection between the notorious so-called DC beltway sniper and the plaintiff. “But to really understand why [DC shooter] recruited the young and impressionable Malvo and then went on his murderous rampage, it’s important to explore his earlier life and, most of all, why he walked into the welcoming arms of the Muslims of the Americas:’ See Twilight pg.84 annexed hereto as “Exhibit J”.  There is no connection whatsoever to this criminal and his actions.

Defendants repeatedly refer to plaintiff as a terrorist organization engaging in terrorist acts and running terrorist training camps in the United States. Defendants bolster their claims through the use of intentionally misleading documents and sources in order to deceive and mislead the public about Plaintiff. In committing the acts herein alleged, the defendants acted willfully, with malice in conscious disregard for the truth or falsity of the above statements. In committing the acts herein alleged, the defendants acted willfully with malice.

 In the same above post Mawyer misinforms the American public by daring them to visit Plaintiffs property by stating: “There will be doubters of course. People who will not believe the Town of Islamberg actually exists. And they’ll have to go see it for themselves. The address is above for those doubters. Just remember, you doubters, whoever you are: You were warned. Stay away.” 

That the above mentioned Islamberg is property belonging to Plaintiff that is home to approximately thirty families consisting of innocent men, women, and children.

By publishing the statements, Defendant intended to provoke the public to fear, paranoia, hatred, and anger, while simultaneously encouraging vigilantism and violence against Plaintiff and putting the safety, well being, and life of every single member of MOA in imminent danger. Families are afraid to allow their children to play in their yards. Women are afraid to travel for fear of being attacked by a deranged zealot or his sympathizers.

The statements, individually and taken as a whole in context of the writings in which they appear, are defamatory per se because they falsely impute to Plaintiff, the commission of criminal offenses, in a manner ruinous to the reputation of plaintiff, locally, nationally and internationally.

This is a reply, although unofficial, to the British PM, as well as the Mayor of London…whom both seem to be hard core Islamic scholars…I was being facetious, they are actually politically correct, scared, dhimmitudified, momma’s boys, not wanting to enrage Muslim and enticing more violent jihad from the “peaceful” and “tolerant” religion…

Too bad politicians throughout the world don’t look at the evidence the Islamic “sacred” text shows, as well as the fact the it is Muslims that perform these atrocities. Instead of addressing the matter, they would rather cower in the back corner and just say, “You can do this, please, don’t hurt ME!”…this also falls under terrorism…because with the possibility of violence coming, politicians are in terror, thus, the name terrorism comes into play.

My biggest question is, if there were so many witnesses that saw this happening on the streets, as it was happening, why didn’t anyone try to stop it?]

U.S. steps up hunt for editor of al-Qaeda online magazine after details emerged Boston bombers followed the digital publication’s bomb-making recipes

The hunt is on.

U.S. authorities are stepping up their efforts to track down the editor of a digital magazine published by Al Qaeda after details emerged that the surviving Boston bomber told investigators he and his brother learned how to build explosives by reading the online publication.

The CIA is believed to be spearheading the effort to find Yahya Ibrahim, a jihadist who has edited ‘Inspire’ since its founding editor-in-chief was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in 2011, the Daily Telegraph in London reports.

‘Inspire clearly is a powerful propaganda tool,’ an unnamed CIA source told the Telegraph saying that officials were concerned about the online magazine’s ability to push ‘potential jihadists to conduct violent action.’

Ibrahim, who publishes his articles and editorial letters in English, is believed to be a war-themed pen name for a propagandist tied to the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, according to the Telegraph.

Scott Stewart, a former State Department special agent who now works for the global intelligence company Stratfor, told the newspaper that he suspects Ibrahim may have similar fundamentalist roots to the digital publication’s founder Samir Khan.
Khan was killed in the same drone attack that took out radical American and Yemini cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in September 2011.

‘Yahya Ibrahim is a distinct individual,’ Stewart, who has analysed ‘Inspire’, said. ‘His presence has been there since issue one, and he speaks in a distinct voice. He is obviously very proficient in English, and it would not be surprising if he were someone, like Khan, from an immigrant family to the U.S.’

Boston Police: 3 More Suspects Taken Into Custody in Connection With Bombing

Three college friends of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were taken into custody Wednesday, accused of removing a backpack containing fireworks from Tsarnaev’s dorm room and lying to investigators.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, both of Kazakhstan, are charged with conspiring to obstruct justice. A third man, Robel Phillipos, is charged with making false statements to federal investigators after Tsarnaev was identified as one of the suspects in the April 15 attack that killed three people and injured more than 260.

An FBI affidavit states Tazhayakov, Kadyrbayev and Phillipos all attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth together with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. According to the affidavit, the three admitted that they removed Tsarnaev’s backpack from his dorm room on the night of April 18, the day investigators released images of the bombing suspects.

“Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov have admitted that they agreed to get rid of it after concluding from news reports that Tsarnaev was one of the Boston Marathon bombers,” the affidavit states.

According to the document, after the bombing suspects’ photos were released Kadyrbayev text Tsarnaev and told him he looked like one of them. Tsarnaev text back “lol” and “you better not text me” and “come to my room and take whatever you want” — which Kadyrbayev at the time interpreted as jokes.

Later, Kadyrbayev, Tazhayakov and Phillipos went to the university campus and to Tsarnaev’s dorm room, where his roommate let them in. The roommate said Tsarnaev had left several hours earlier. According to the affidavit, the three suspects watched a movie in the dorm room, then noticed a backpack with fireworks inside that had been opened and emptied of gunpowder.

“Kadyrbayev knew when he saw the empty fireworks that Tsarnaev was involved in the Marathon bombing,” the affidavit states. “Kadyrbayev decided to remove the backpack from the room in order to help his friend Tsarnaev avoid trouble. He decided to take Tsarnaev’s laptop as well because he did not want Tsarnaev’s roommate to think he was stealing or behaving suspiciously by just taking the backpack.”

When the three returned to the apartment shared by Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov, they watched news reports about the bombing suspects, and “collectively decided to throw the backpack and fireworks into the trash because they did not want Tsarnaev to get into trouble.”

The three suspects were in custody Wednesday pending a 3:30 p.m. federal court hearing in Boston.

According to the Associated Press, Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev have been held in county jail for more than a week on allegations they violated their student visas while attending the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. They appeared through video conference for an immigration hearing in Boston on Wednesday.

Reports have circulated that a BMW said to belong to Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev bore a novelty license plate that read, “Terrorista #1,” but those reports have not been verified by officials.

The Boston Police Department made the announcement about the new suspects Wednesday morning via Twitter.

“Three additional suspects taken into custody in Marathon bombing case. Details to follow,” the department tweeted. Police also said there was no threat to public safety.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is recovering in a prison hospital from injuries sustained while he was on the run from authorities. He is charged with using a weapon of mass destruction to kill and could receive the death penalty. His older brother, bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed following a gun battle with police.

In light of the new revelations from Steven Emerson, that the Saudi national who was once a ‘person of interest’ in the Boston marathon bombings, identified by his full name as Abdul Rahman Ali Issa Al-Salimi Al-Harbi is being deported on ‘national security grounds’, why is the Saudi no longer a person of interest?

Via Okaz, a very prominent Saudi newspaper, we have a photo of Alharbi during his stay in a Boston hospital. He doesn’t look too concerned, does he?

The following is based on a translation of the article that appeared in Okaz:

Ambassador to the royal crown, Adel ben Ahmad Al-Jubeir, had several phone calls with the paper as well as with the Royal family. He stated that very high-ranking, U.S. government officials stated that there is no suspicion of any Saudi nationals relative to the Boston marathon explosions.

The Saudi Consul General in New York, Abdel Karim Alqin assured Okaz that all Saudis have been cleared and two Saudis were injured, including Alharbi and a Saudi female doctor named Nura Khalid Saleh al-Ajaji.

Prince Saud al-Faisal, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah from the Foreign Ministry, and Prince Khaled bin Saud were involved in the entire affair.

Three other Saudis were cleared from the forbidden area, two of which were put in a hotel at the expense of the Saudi consulate

Alqin disclosed that he cleared three Saudis from the forbidden area and housed two of them in a hotel; the third stayed with a friend. He also met with a group of Saudi students, telling them to carry on with their lives and that Saudi ambassadors would handle everything. These students were also told not to cooperate with any media entities and to lay low.

At a site called Sabq, Alharbi’s father talks about how a member of the Aldawsari clan – Ali Aldawsari – visited his son in the hospital. Remember what we wrote about Khalid Aldawsari here:

Take Khalid Aldawsari, a Saudi national. He is a student and an Al-Qaeda terrorist who planned to use weapons of mass destruction in the U.S., to include an attempted assassination of president Bush. Aldawsari was not a lone wolf; he was backed by an entire system. The wealthy and powerful Aldawsari clan, which includes the powerful Sheik Saud Bin Mut’ab who hosted a support group for the terrorist defending him publicly while funding his legal team.

Again, the role of the Saudi clans becomes important. Abdul Rahman Ali Al-Harbi belongs to a clan that consists of several al-Qaeda members. Ali Aldawsari belongs to a clan that consisted of one man who attempted to assassinate George W. Bush.

Egyptian mosque turned into house of torture for Christians after protesting Muslim Brotherhood

Muslim Brotherhood hard-liners stormed a mosque in suburban Cairo, turning it into torture chamber for Christians who had been demonstrating against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood in the latest case of violent persecution that experts fear will only get worse.

 FOX News Such stories have become increasingly common as tensions between Egypt’s Muslims and Copts mount, but in the latest case, mosque officials corroborated much of the account and even filed a police report. Demonstrators, some of whom were Muslim, say they were taken from the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in suburban Cairo to a nearby mosque on Friday and tortured for hours by hard-line militia members.

Amir Ayad lies in a hospital bed after he was beaten by Islamic hardliners who stormed a mosque in suburban Cairo.

“They accompanied me to one of the mosques in the area and I discovered the mosque was being used to imprison demonstrators and torture them,” Amir Ayad, a Coptic who has been a vocal protester against the regime, told MidEast Christian News from a hospital bed.

Ayad said he was beaten for hours with sticks before being left for dead on a roadside. Amir’s brother, Ezzat Ayad, said he received an anonymous phone call at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the caller saying his brother had been found near death and had been taken to the ambulance.

“He underwent radiation treatment that proved that he suffered a fracture in the bottom of his skull, a fracture in his left arm, a bleeding in the right eye, and birdshot injuries,” Ezzat Ayad said.

Officials at the Bilal ibn Rabah Mosque said radical militias stormed the building, in the Cairo suburb of Moqattam, after Friday prayers. “[We] deeply regret what has happened and apologize to the people of Moqattam,” mosque officials said in a statement, adding that “they had lost control over the mosque at the time.” The statement also “denounced and condemned the violence and involving mosques in political conflicts.”

The latest crackdown is further confirmation that the Muslim Brotherhood’s most hard-line elements are consolidating control in Egypt, according to Shaul Gabbay, a professor of international studies at the University of Denver.

“It will only get worse,” said Gabbay. “This has been a longstanding conflict, but now that the Muslim Brotherhood is in power, it is moving forward to implement its ideology – which is that Christians are supposed to become Muslims. “There is no longer anything to hold them back,” he continued. “The floodgates are open.”

Gabbay said the violent militias that allegedly tortured Ayad work hand-in-hand with police and may, in fact, be beyond the control of increasingly unpopular President Mohammed Morsi. While he may benefit from roving bands that attack demonstrators, they also undermine his claim of being a legitimate leader.

“Egyptian society is split over the Morsi regime, and it is not just a Coptic-Muslim split,” Gabbay said. “The less conservative elements of the Muslim society are increasingly uneasy with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Christian Copts are an easy target, but they are not alone in their mistrust of the Brotherhood.”

Experts agreed that the Copts, who comprise roughly 10 percent of the nation’s 83 million people, are not alone in their opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood, which took power in hotly contested elections following the 2011 ouster of longtime President Hosni Mubarak. Moderate Muslims and secular liberals are increasingly uncomfortable with the Islamization of the government.  

Sheikh Ahmed Saber, a well-known imam and official in Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments, has blasted Morsi’s justice ministry for allowing persecution of Copts. “All Egyptians in general are oppressed, but Christians are particularly oppressed, because they suffer double of what others suffer,” Saber told MCN.
